IMF's Rogoff-Looser China yuan timing tough call
Reuters, 08.14.03, 6:00 PM ET
By Anna Willard

WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - If China adopted a more flexible regime for the yuan, the currency wouldn't necessarily strengthen over the medium term and the best timing for such a move is a tough call, a top IMF official said on Thursday.

In an interview with Reuters, IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff said there is a case for China to loosen its currency's tie to the U.S. dollar. However, he warned its economy is still in transition to a more open market, which makes it difficult to say when it would be appropriate to free up the yuan.

"If you look over the medium term, there is some ambiguity about which way the real value of the yuan would move," Rogoff said.
