Nicely done column. Retells a lot in a little.

Hi LindyB.

every household in Britain with a color television set has to pay a licensing fee of approximately $187

Thanks for the link. It's damn cheap too I tell you...

/rant on.

I guess that the price us Brits are more then willing to pay to get a TV station that does not have adverts. And I really mean that by the way. I like watching the discovery and history channels too, but if I see one more freaking advert for stray animals I'm going to barf... even our RSPCA has started a campaign where they use repetitive adverts practically every five minutes. This is all on top of the freaking adverts for personal loans and the recos from dumb people (hey look! we are dumb just like you!!) that you should take out a loan too. Yes.. lets all owe tons of money!

/rant off.

I watch the ITV channels for updates of the Kelly case. It's the UK's commercial independent channels. They often have some good stuff (TV adverts aside, not quite as bad as the History Channel and Discovery channels), their web sites are not like the BBC's though. They just publish the programming schedules. No 10 (Tony Blair's government) is by no means out of the woods and there is widespread criticism of even the narrow defined terms of the enquiry.. i.e it's just a whitewash job.

But to answer your question. Yes, the BBC is getting a good kicking and they deserve it too -g- They are/were biased in a political way. Hopefully we will see some improvement after all this.

"BBC staff often say proudly that it is their responsibility to oppose whatever government is in power. Well, actually, it isn't. . . . Examination and analysis are the business of tax-funded journalism. Opposition is the business of mandated politicians."

And that's what it comes down to, doesn't it? The Beeb's definition of "fair and balanced" seems to be "report the opposite of whatever the government says, true or not." Journalism reduced to contrarianism.
