HUTTON TARGETS CAMPBELL

Downing Street's spin chiefs are set to be grilled with the resumption of the Hutton inquiry into the death of Dr David Kelly.

Tony Blair's chief of staff Jonathan Powell will face the questioning at the beginning of the week as will the Ministry of Defence's head of Press, Pam Teare.

But all eyes are on Tuesday, when Number 10 communications director Alastair Campbell takes the stand.

He has been at the heart of the Dr Kelly saga ever since BBC defence reporter Andrew Gilligan, who has already been in front of Lord Hutton, said his source claimed Mr Campbell had altered the Government's Iraq dossier.

Mr Campbell can expect to face tough questioning on his role in preparing the Government's dossiers outlining the case for war against Iraq.

Mr Hoon: Must "carry the can"

Hutton will also have the chance to interrogate Mr Blair's official spokesman Tom Kelly, forced to issue a public apology after comparing Dr Kelly to a the fantasist fictional character Walter Mitty after the weapons expert's death.

Revelations from the Hutton inquiry are reportedly close to claiming their first major victim - Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon.

The Sunday Telegraph said the under fire Cabinet minister has admitted to friends he had to "carry the can" for Dr Kelly's apparent suicide.

The first week of Hutton heard how Mr Hoon had overruled a request that Dr Kelly be spared a grilling by MPs on the Iraq dossier.

The inquiry was called after the body of Dr Kelly was found not far from his Oxfordshire home.

His name had been leaked to the media by the MoD as the probable source for Mr Gilligan's story claiming the Government's Iraq dossier had been "sexed up".
