As the discussion was going on, I pondered if there was not a distinction to be made between a calling and a noble calling, a calling being worthwhile, not shallow and selfish,

Lovely description here, of the Noble Eightfold Path, why not look to the master ...

You have a lot of Buddha in you Karen too .......maybe lovely , maybe noble , maybe practical and detached & fair ...

why not all three , four or "eight"?

;-)

Interesting choice to put before a catholic Nun...

to ask her whether she is carrying the cross for Jesus
or following her bliss married to Christ as God and the Holy spirit directs...

matters not really , and usually have not ever met a Catholic Nun I didn't like ...or Buddhist for that matter ,
since Buddhism had it's own Nuns 500yrs before Jesus'
birth. Pesky godless Pagans ....

And then there's Sister Wendy Beckett....now she is quite
beautiful in my view, and a consecrated virgin definitely "plucked
from a different world "!

* amazing the insights and wonderful things one can learn
from some blessed virgins & madonnas...when they are not shut up.

I think many people think their calling is important- and "better" - if they are lucky enough to find a calling. And people who can't find one, probably wish they had one. But it would be bad manners to say all over town that one's "calling" was better than other callings or better than no calling- and people with no calling probably don't want to admit they wish they had one, if they can even admit to themselves that they do not have one.

It's too bad we can't all find a way to be of benefit to others, in a way we recognize, and can feel good about. But it's also true that sometimes benefits are hard to see- causes and effects not always being obvious things. So that language about "not necessarily better or worse" is not only polite, it also admits the limits of our ability to know the future. The women who gave birth to some of the great men in history did their part for all of us through their labor :-) So if you were the mother of Buddha, for example, you might be able to see your life's calling in terms of having produced such a man. On the other hand, Hitler's mom has a lot ot answer for. But who would have known that when she was holding baby Hitler in her arms?
