"There is an inherent human responsibility to care for the earth," Leavitt said. "But there's also an economic imperative that we're dealing with in a global economy to do it less expensively." Funny.....only when it comes to subjects like the environment does that old Rep. fiscal conservatism come to the fore. You can blow a wad on Iraq and that's okay but when it comes to the earth, we need to do it on a shoestring. LOL!Perhaps we're on opposite sides of his position? Christie had no effective position, IMO. My impression of her and her record was that she was trying to save the environment within reason. I had no problem with that. I don't think she made much head way with the current Prez because he's not in two words "environmental friendly". As I understand it, it was the lack of progress that caused her to quit.I'd say economic effectiveness is one of the real important things that needs to be looked at WRT the environment. That's interesting......the industrial capitalists of this country fukked up and continue to fukk up the environment in this country. And that's okay. Occasionally, we fine then over the protests of conservatives but mostly they get off scot free. Now to add insult to injury, we have to clean up their sh*t messes and we have to make it make sense economically. Give me a break. Its taken a small fortune to clean up the New Jersey Meadowlands. For a long time, it was a financial drain. But now suddenly, a tourist industry is cropping up. New buildings are being built, generating tax revenues. Ten years ago, no one could have predicted the results.......after all, its just meadowlands. However, there is money to be made in clean living. But by your standards, we would never have gotten to this point because it didn't make economic sense. Costa Rica is getting rich off of saving its rain forest. People are paying to preserve acre after acre and its tourism industry is thriving because people in droves are coming down to see the preserved rainforests. Its seems to me that conservatives are short sighted. Because something doesn't interest them, they don't see the benefits that could be reaped. In my experience, good things usually result from positive human efforts and bad from negative efforts. But then, that's me! Lets wait 5 years and see how he turns out. Let's do so but in the meantime, please don't offend me with the notion that Reps. like Mr. Leavitt just want to save money. I've seen how the GOP likes to spend money on its favored special interests. Its only with those special interests it deems unimportant that suddenly their 'penny saved is a penny earned' attitude comes to the surface. We're not buying it for a second! ted
