India warned over China's growth pace

NEW DELHI: Indian Privatisation Minister Arun Shourie has warned that China's economy will outstrip India's six times over in the next 15 years if India continues with its present slow pace of economic reform.

In an article in the Indian Express newspaper yesterday, Shourie said India had "unbounded opportunities and incomparable advantages to seize them." But if these chances were frittered away, "unemployment will reach such proportions that social unrest will become unmanageable.

"Similarly, if the rates of growth of India and China continue to differ by the margins of the past 15 years, within the next 15 years the Chinese economy will be six times that of India."

The federal government has set a revenue target from privatisation of 132 billion rupees ($2.75bn) in the current financial year to March 2004.
