The real problem is that the US capital goods industry relies on new products and new inventions. Whenever we have one of these frothy over-investment periods, the innovation stops for awhile and cost cutting and other non-creative aspects of business take center stage, areas where the US cannot excel. During these periods (this is the second one I have experienced) it looks like the US is doomed for good. Until the next set of inventions come out and revive business again. Fortunately the light is at the end of the tunnel on new things.
