”But such extreme violence as acid being thrown in these young ladies' faces ?
That unerves me greatly...”

I assure you that your nerves are intact. This is a horrendous injustice and despicable act. Any person of principle and conscience would condemn it without hesitation. You make a good point that the rationalization for it comes from a totalitarian viewpoint that is without compassion or regard for individual circumstances. Freedom of expression that contradicts the totalitarian is intolerable. And so, the totalitarian should be despised as a despotic brute who intends harm to all in his path for the sake of his own glorification. For the totalitiarian: freedom of religion, is intolerable, freedom of speech is intolerable, even freedom to think is intolerable. It is the very pinnacle of hypocrisy that the perps think they are representing Islam, when they act to oppress the free will of thinking and feeling persons.

Free countries are the models of the reverse. You are free to think, speak, believe and… dress as you choose. It is because we fight to preserve this, that totalitarian regimes cannot succeed against us. The acid in the face acts were condemned within and without Islam and Islamic countries. They were fairly isolated acts of extreme brutality. And where attitudes like this are entrenched or pervasive, people of principle and conscience will take a stand and crush it, as in Afghanistan, and Iraq.

People in this country die, tattoo, carve, pierce, brand, have surgery to change their anatomy, even their sex, etc. The underlying view is that they are allowed to be free thinkers.

In the recent blackout, the Detroit area announced that they had only 80 felony arrests over night. They said this was a typical summer night. I suspect that there were some brutal and inhumane acts in the mix of these. Some of them were undoubtedly perpetrated by a man against a woman and because he didn’t think she measured up to some standard. 1/365 of the year in one out of thousands of US towns and cities. I am sure you are familiar with the data on violent assault against women in this country, so I wont waste your time more with that. The point is that, I hold the individuals who perpetrate responsible for their actions and the governments who create order responsible for the system of justice...or lack there of.
