I thought she was merely torn between wanting several things.

Gee, that's not the impression I got at all. I thought she wanted, first of all, to wait a while before getting married but the familial expectations were that she would marry right after college and particularly before her father died. I read those as obligations, not wants. I guess you can say that she wants to live up to her obligations, be a dutiful daughter, but that's not the same thing as wanting what the obligations would have her do.

Re the love match, it was interesting that she said she wanted that, but yet she instantly rejected every overture from men, going to some extreme to do so, thereby dramatically reducing her chances of finding one. I wonder if part of the appeal of an arranged marriage is that she doesn't have to do anything but sit back and wait for the applicants to show up and she doesn't have to worry about being an old maid. Better a marriage that doesn't work out than no marriage at all.

I feel for her. She seems like a bright and thoughtful young woman and she's between a rock and a hard place. Makes me want to give her a hug. <g> I hope whatever she ends up with makes her happy, not just dutiful.
