Nod for bridge kills two birds with one stone
HK-Macau-Zhuhai bridge will help revive economy and even out growth in Pearl River Delta region

...
But not everybody views the bridge in the same light as Beijing.

Opponents include Hong Kong's richest man Li Ka Shing and its most influential politician, Mr Henry Fok, both of whom are concerned that the bridge will jeopardise their port investments in the region.

Mr Li had invested heavily in the container ports at Yantian and Gaolan, located in the eastern and western sides of the Pearl River Delta respectively.

Mr Fok had done the same in Nansha, in the middle of the region.

The bridge would allow cargo to head directly for Hong Kong, bypassing the three ports.

Guangdong provincial authorities, especially the Guangzhou city government, too were lukewarm about the project.

Without the bridge, Guangzhou would have emerged as the undisputed economic centre of the region, overtaking Hong Kong in providing infrastructure services to the whole of south China.

Having the bridge would instead strengthen the territory's regional supremacy.
