I really like that site, and his opinions. Honestly. At the time of the Washington Agreement in 1999 when he was updating on a daily basis he timed his exit of a fully invested long gold portfolio almost perfectly to the minute, out basically at the very top. He did a special intraday update to specify he sold 100%. I hadn't been so positive on him until that point, but from then on I have always been very interested to read his updates - which are now few and far between. And if I had used his requirements for returning long, I would have missed the lows of 2000 when I got back in too early. Sure he has been off lately, and missed much of the 2002 moves, but I think he is still excellent at calling the extremes for tops and bottoms. I respect that he has his system and he plays it well, including the extremes of the COT's. To me his current allocation seems prudent on a risk/reward basis:

"I have reduced my long gold share and gold mutual fund positions from 35% to 9% to take advantage of the recent price spike in gold mining shares, and to capitalize on the superior opportunity in short U.S. technology positions, which have increased from 20% to 57% of my total portfolio, with an emphasis on internet and semiconductor shares, and a small short position in biotech shares. I have 6% of my assets in gold and silver coins and related collectibles in a safe deposit box, about half of which were purchased in March and April of this year."

I lost track of "the other" Kaplan a few years back, when he stopped running his goldminingoutlook.com website. We who used to populate the Yahoo SSRI board 4-7 years ago had great fun discussing, among other things, SJ Kaplan's latest. Last I remember, he had shunned miners and dove into tech, at exactly the wrong time.

Regards,

crusty

if you check the jan 6/03 update, you would note a very well timed call...also, the sell signal in the fall of '99 was bang on...
