...To be more correct, everytime AMD has lost the battle. It's not that AMD hasn't been able to compete - they have and, on occasion, they upset Intel's apple cart. But they always seem to stumble on that next step with yield problems or design flaws.

FYI - the Itanium was designed to be a server uProcessor and is not really a PC chip. The Opteron is the first chip aimed at the PC market. And the open question at the moment is which direction does the PC market need to go - 64 bit to move more data or multi-threading for more computations.
