NEW YORK (Aug. 18) - The brother of the late mob boss John Gotti was indicted on Monday on charges of plotting to kill Gambino crime family turncoat Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, whose testimony led to the "Teflon Don's" conviction. Peter Gotti, who was an acting boss of the Gambino crime family, was indicted on racketeering charges accusing him and five Gambino associates of murder and conspiracy to murder, witness tampering, extortion and loan-sharking. The indictment, filed in Manhattan federal court, follows the March conviction of Gotti and six others in a separate racketeering case heard by a Brooklyn federal jury. In the earlier case, Gotti was accused of taking control of the Gambino family and carrying out an extortion scheme that stretched from New York City's waterfront to Hollywood. Among witnesses was actor Steven Seagal, who testified he had been threatened by a Gambino captain. In the current indictment, Gotti and others are charged with conspiring from October 1999 to May 2002 to kill Gravano, whose testimony had led the 1990 arrest of Gambino boss John Gotti and his eventual conviction and imprisonment. John Gotti, who was jailed for life in 1992, died last year in a prison hospital a week after Peter Gotti was indicted in the Brooklyn case. Peter Gotti became head of the Gambino family after his nephew and John Gotti's son, John "Junior" Gotti, was sentenced to 6-1/2 years in prison in a 1999 plea bargain for racketeering and other crimes.
