We must have media covering our wars, or we the people lose the little control over them that we have. In the book Virtual War- beyond Kosovo, I thought this issue was addressed quite well. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that they get killed, since children and women are also being shot in the streets- but this highlights the hit and miss targeting by our military. They are nervous, and they are killing innocent people- how many of them? Who knows exactly. We can't trust the military to tell us, and we can't trust the opposition. The most trustworthy agent in the conflict is probably the media. I take that very seriously. The media is a bulwark against abuses by our government, and in our government, including abuses when our government takes us to war. "Embedded" reporters are prisoners of the very system they are meant to be watching, and keeping in check- I don't think Mr. Sowell takes that anywhere near seriously enough.
