IC market to likely grow 9% in '03, says iSuppli

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- There are three possible scenarios for the semiconductor industry in 2003, which ranges from 8 percent to 12 percent growth this year over 2002, according to a new report from iSuppli Corp. here today (Aug. 18, 2003).

It also appears that iSuppli has slightly altered its IC forecast for 2003. In December of 2002, the firm lowered its prediction to 11.8 percent for ICs in 2003.

iSuppli's new forecast includes three scenarios. The "probable scenario" is that the IC industry will grow by 9 percent in 2003 over 2002, according to the El Segundo-based research firm.

The optimistic scenario calls for the IC industry to grow by 12 percent in 2003, while the pessimistic forecast is at 8 percent, according to iSuppli.

To achieve iSuppli's 9 percent growth forecast, IC sales would have to grow on a sequential basis, from 3 percent in the second quarter of 2003, to more than 5 percent in both the third and fourth quarters of this year, according to the report.

In the optimistic scenario, IC sales would have to grow between 5 percent to 10 percent in both the third and fourth quarters. In the pessimistic scenario, IC sales would stall and grow only 4 percent in third and fourth quarters, according to iSuppli.

In comparison, market forecaster Gartner Inc. raised its predictions for the 2003 semiconductor market today. The annual growth estimate has been lifted from 8.3 percent to 11.2 percent and as a result the worldwide semiconductor market is forecast to reach $173 billion in 2003, compared to $168 million, which the company was predicting in May ( see today's story ).
