From where to where? Manhattan to Staten Island and then what? Queens, Bronx, LI...how do you service these boroughs by ferry?

The one that gets decent amount of business is from Wall Street area to Hoboken and Jersey City (NJ). I think one of them takes you to the railroad terminal on New Jersey side.

But the increased volume of traffic carried by ferries would hardly make a dent in overall total, since the rail services serve millions of passengers per day.

NYC is surrounded by water. Check out a map of NYC:

You could have ferries to LI, to Queens, to Brooklyn, to Weschester, to CT/New Haven. There could be more service to NJ.

The problem is that many of these areas already get tons of rail so you would have to build the ferry service slowly but it could be done. And it would provide a great alternative.

In the Puget Sound, many people prefer cars to trains or buses but prefer ferries to cars. And its expensive commuting.
