Fixed pie thinking. The universe has an infinite number of ways in which to be productive. We simply have to discover them. I have a job right now which is so new that it doesn't even have a proper title. People are forever asking me, "Now what is it I call what it is that you do?" It wasn't even possible to do what I do every day 2 years ago because the technology wasn't ready. One of the reasons I have a new job is because my old job, photographic printer, has been moving towards obsolete rapidly. I was a photographic printer for over 30 years and the technology was essentially the same for over a 100 years. Now it's going the way of the typesetter, paste-up artist, telegraph operator. This kind of thing is happening all over the US and has been happening for countless generations to different professions. You can't stop technology from making your job obsolete and you can't stop business from seeking out the lowest cost materials or labor. Nor would you gain anything if you could. You gain far more by letting business seek out the most efficient route to profit. I was talking about this the other day with a friend, I told her we heard all of this back in the 70s about jobs leaving the US and how all those people would never get jobs that paid as well as the ones they lost. Ha! What we didn't foresee then was there would come a time when any idiot with a BS in computer science was going to get a job right out of college that paid three times what those damned steel workers made. Then she said, but what about the steel workers? I said apparently they got new jobs or retired because we had less than 5% unemployment a while back, remember? People are unbelievably adaptable to change and change they will. You really can't believe that we go into decline simply because we no longer overpay a bunch of IT guys who added questionable value in the first place. A lot are already busy working at jobs which are so new they don't have titles. The rest are complaining about the decline of America on financial message boards. Sorry to say, I can't see that the same transition to new industry will happen for Mexico simply because they had so many years of ruinous Socialist government and they lack one of the most important ingredients for capitalism to really thrive, basic protection of private property (from thugs, private and government sponsored). This is why they come here to make money. This is why so many foreigners risk their lives to come here to make money.
