There may be niches for ferries, places that are not served well or at all by rails, but on a large scale, I don't think much will happen.

Joe, that's too bad......they really are a great alternative. Keep in mind......ferry service as a form of commuting.....is relatively new. If the Hudson River was not well promoted or poorly set up, that could easily contribute to the failure. Ferry service in Long Beach, CA didn't take off until they got new equipment.

An advantage to ferry service is that it never suffers from gridlock or a subway slowdown.
