I lived there for a number of years...they are not practical...there are hordes of people that descend on Manhattan daily and even that is a fraction of the commuting that takes place within the 5 boroughs and outlying areas. Ferries are too slow and you have to have a second method of commuting from where they drop you off.

The newer ferries are not slow at all and like I said to Joe, they don't have to worry about gridlock or subway slowdowns.

As for a second method of commuting, how is that not like transferring from the BMT line to the IRT line? They should set up a couple of ferry ports in Manhattan and then put rail/subway spurs to the ports so that people can transfer directly. That probably already exists in the ferry port in lower Manhattan.

I'm not sure why I am pushing ferries although last Thurs. looked like a nightmare in NYC and ferry service was one of the ways things were mitigated to some degree.
