I got the feeling IVN is being bought , either by mistake for the same namesake IVANHOE IVAN/nasdaq_ which is ramping up today about + 75% !!! or in sympathy, whatever the case, I am glad for both!

You own a bunch of stock. It goes up.

You sell a call against the amount of stock. If the stock soars, you're covered, being able to sell the stock at the higher price to deliver to the owner of the call. Stock goes down a little, you've locked in profit. Stock goes nowhere, you get to keep the call premium.

Let's say you sell an EBAY 50 call without owning the stock when EBAY is trading at 45. EBAY goes to 100 and you're not "covered", you're on the hook for 50 points of profit.
