Washington's unemployment rate remains well above nation
Washington's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 7.5 percent, down slightly from the revised June rate of 7.8 percent, according to the state Employment Security Department. The June rate was revised upward from 7.7 percent originally reported July 15, which is typical after the state adds in claims from out of state and other anomalies.

The national rate was also down to 6.2 percent in July, compared to 6.4 percent in June.

Though the rate in Washington was down slightly based on household survey data, the number of jobs fell and the number of people making unemployment claims was up, said Thomas Bynum, acting deputy commissioner of Employment Security.

"The labor market in Washington continues to send mixed signals," Bynum said.

Washington is down 100 jobs since this time last year, the first year-over-year decline in 2003, Employment Security said. The manufacturing sector was the worst performer, losing 21,200 jobs since last July. Aerospace accounted for about half of the losses in manufacturing.

Washington's unemployment rate remains one of the worst in the nation.

Oregon last week reported unemployment of 8.1 percent, which is likely to be the highest in the nation once all the states compile their data. Alaska also has seen rates above 7 percent in recent months.
