It should also be mentioned that most French would have no idea how dangerous the temperature had become. You will notice that most of the deaths in the US from heat related causes occurs in the North, not the South where people are used to it and plan for it.

Back home in Canada, most people have no idea how to handle those kinds of temperatures and few have air conditioning. My Mom and my in-laws refuse to visit us from June through October :-) They plan their visits for November or Spring. And we have since taken to living in Canada during the summer (thanks to telecommuting).

I wonder how we would do in a severe cold snap (in North Carolina) - say 0 to 10 Degrees F for 2 weeks. Suspect it would be very bad...
