Yes, that is the point. Capitialism and democracy are a potent mix, in that they serve as the best practical example of government and society that there is. Years of communism only proved that communism sucks, and it is in reality a terrible social organization. Even if their leaders were not despots, the human condition cannot thrive under communism.

Did you not have your eyes and ears open at the time? When the people in the USSR and Eastern Bloc demanded democracy, did they cry "Reagan has convinced us what a wonderful leader he is!" or "We want to get rid of communism because we fear the might of Reagan!"? Certainly not! They wanted freedom and the ability to determine their own destiny. To work hard and see the fruits of their labor. To dream of a better day for their children. To live with hope, and not fear.

That is what 'brought the wall down'.
