Still in denial Robert?ZOA Praises Bush On Pipes, Comes Down Against Powell 19:21 Aug 19, '03 / 21 Av 5763 The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), the oldest pro-Israel organization in the United States, has praised President Bush's decision to continue to stand by his nomination of Dr. Daniel Pipes to the board of the United States Institute of Peace. ZOA leadership sent a letter to Bush, stating, "We agree with you that Dr. Pipes, an eminent scholar of Islam and the Middle East, would make a superb addition to the Institute's board. His important research on Islamic extremism and supporters of terrorism has played a crucial role in educating Americans about the terrorist threat, especially in the wake of 9/11. As you know, Muslim extremist groups are lobbying to block the nomination. Some of the opponents of Dr. Pipes, such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), have openly praised terrorist groups such as Hizbullah and Hamas; no wonder they want to stop his nomination. It is important to note that moderate Muslims, by contrast, have endorsed the nomination. By standing firm on the Pipes nomination, you will be taking another important step towards victory in the war against terrorism." At the same time, the ZOA has come out against soft-on-Hamas statements by Secretary of State Colin Powell. "For the second time in two weeks," the ZOA writes, "Powell has said that the Hamas terrorist group need not be eliminated - which clearly contradicts President Bush's recent statement that Hamas must be dismantled." Powell told Egypt's Nile Television last week, "I didn't call for an all-out war against [Hamas]," and then spoke at length about Hamas' goal to destroy Israel by killing innocent people and that it would not work. In a similar vein, Secretary Powell said on July 1, 2003: "We are going to have to convert this kind of organization [Hamas] into organizations that are no longer interested in using terror as a political weapon." President Bush, on the other hand, said at a press conference with European Union leaders on June 25, 2003: "In order for there to be peace in the Middle East, we must see organizations such as Hamas dismantled." len
