LL, 1. Not irrelevant. Winning at Saratoga convinced the French to help us. Arnold hated the French and felt that we'd be better off remaining an English colony than becoming a French colony. That and never getting a paycheck made him turn traitor.

2. The English snubbed him. But he was still their best general. We are very lucky he was snubbed. He won all his battles, after Quebec, and had an outstanding plan for defeating Washington's army, which the English refused to consider. He wanted to attack their weak spot, which was Lafayette's command. It might have worked, but Howe and Cornwallis preferred to sit around and wait for The Royal Navy to win the war for them.

3. Not a great discovery. Historians have known about the conspiracy of the warhawks for years. The three became bitter enemies later on, but when Calhoun resigned from the Senate, they cried like babies. Like many war hawks, none had had an especially distiguised military career. Not that I can brag about mine, either. I lost more stripes than a shedding zebra. <G>
