Lieberman is positioning himself for 2008, not 2004. In the wreckage of the party in after next year, he figures that last thing they'll want is another Clinton-and that the left wing chains will be melted away by the heat of the landslide against a humiliated Howard Dean.

I have my doubts that the party can survive at all. But Lieberman is more optimistic. Whether it's from vision or simple necessity remains to be seen...
