it should be noted that Intel, Motorola, Cisco and more than a few others are well represented in Israel with plants/foundries and R & D; the Technion is Israel's MIT/Stanford and there are other highly rated schools putting out first class engineers.

And when the former USSR allowed Jews to leave (thanks to the U S's Jackson-Vanik legislation) a large number of highly trained engineers emigrated to Israel, significantly augmenting the very talented pool of native engineers there.

Why did Israel develop such capabilities? Thank the Arabs who tried several times to wipe them out, push the Israelis into the Mediterranean - Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan to a lesser extent, Lebanon...so Israel had to develop tecnhological superiority to offset the numeric superiority of the combined Arab armies that outnumbered the Israelis by a factor of 5:1 or maybe 10:1.

The Arabs had their Soviet patrons to supply technologies so they didn't develop their own but Israel's back was to the wall and they had no choice except to do so. And they needed the exports since, though it's the land of milk and honey. the Lord forgot to include oil :-) and gave it to those other guys instead.

One man's perspective on why Israel is a high tech leader.
