15:12 ET Volume Breakout -- Covad Communications

While we usually shy away from highlighting bulletin board stocks on this page due to thin volume and often questionable fundamentals, Covad Communications (COVD.OB 3.02 +0.38, 14%) is a name that many people are familiar with.

Co is a provider of DSL connectivity that emerged from bankruptcy in Dec 2001. While far from the $100 level stock traded more than 3 years ago, Covad shares have broken out to a new 52-wk high today on heavy volume of 8 mln shares (4x avg volume).

Contributing to strength in stock was recent price target increase by Kaufman Brothers to $8 from $5. The target increase came as firm's sources have indicated that Covad is on track to win a wholesale contract from MCI, which would use much of Covad's 2,200 central office footprint addressing 45 mln lines. Firm looks for a new Covad/MCI wholesale deal to provide a substantial catalyst for Covad shares, as it would give co all of the "Big Three" (AT&T, MCI and Sprint).
