10:10 ET Mortgage activity continues to fall : As
reported on Briefing.com's Bond Ticker page this morning,
mortgage activity continued to fall off in the latest
week. The MBA applications index fell -11% in the week of
Aug 15 as purchase applications fell to a four month low and
the refinancing index was the lowest since July of 2002.
From the record highs of late May the purchase index is down
15% as refis have plunged 72%.
The numbers are
contributing to weakness in the homebuilding sector today
(CTX -1.38, RYL -1.34, HOV -1.30, BZH -1.24).

13:22 ET GE says July "short-cycle orders" fell as much
as 5%

North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts July 2003 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.97

.....A book-to-bill of 0.97 means that $97 worth of new orders
were received for every $100 of product billed for the month.....

.....The three-month average of worldwide billings in July
2003 was $788 million. The billings figure is one percent
above the revised June 2003 level of $777 million and 19
percent below the July 2002 billings level of $969 million.....

18:00 ET Hewlett-Packard comments on Q4 outlook (HPQ) 22.11
-0.02: -- Update -- In response to an analyst's question, HPQ
says it ended Q3 (July) with "strong momentum"... and sees
particular strength in its enterprise segment... Management
also said it expects "certain charges carrying over into Q4"
but expects them to end by fiscal year-end... As for IT
spending, HPQ believes the climate is improving, although it
is lagging the general economic turnaround.
