India is a bit less than 50% at entry level, but their costs are absolutely not 1/8th. They are not $5,000 in India. Some of the non-mainstream media loves to sensationalize things to the point of inaccuracy or miscomparisons. $60k here is around $25k to $28k there, and then their cost of living is a lot lower.

I am the one who mentioned the $5000 salary, but it is not for an engineer, it is the support staff, call center workers etc. I am referring to.

hi Amy,

They are not $5,000 in India. Some of the non-mainstream media loves to sensationalize things to the point of inaccuracy or miscomparisons. $60k here is around $25k to $28k there

you will need to substantiate this. i do not believe it. e.g., WSJ had a recent article about a Computer Science MS student who was going to Bangalore to work for 12K. 5K, i agree, is unlikely for engineers, but there are plenty, plenty of call centers and data entry firms paying these wages.

as for 60K here being 28K there, i totally do not believe that. WSJ just the other day had an article discussing outsourcing of junior analyst (Wall Street) positions to Indian MBAs, for 25K. these are jobs which pay 145K in NYC according to the article. not 60K.

cos wouldn't be moving jobs offshore in the numbers they are if there were only 50% savings, which is not that much when you add in all the PITA factors. but 75% and upwards starts to sound pretty good.

think of this--tons of maquiladoras in Mexico are being shut down due to offshoring to China. if the pay is that much cheaper in China than in Mexico in mfg, do you really think it is only 50% less than in the Silicon Valley for services?
