The stocks seem to always lead the POG IMO. In the last few weeks I felt the the upward move in gold share prices was signaling a move higher for the metal.

One of my buy indicators for gold shares is a large drop in the metal price and gold shares holding their ground or even moving up a bit. I think July 16th was one those days.

The reverse of this can be a sell indicator when gold moves up and share prices don't.
