Possibly one indicator re the ability of Europeans to distinguish between the US state whose policies they abhor and the American people is that there has been no boycotts, name changes a la "freedom fries" etc of American goods, even in France. In contrast, check out the "freedom fries" rants, pouring French wine down toilets, etc in the US. My understanding is that Europeans thought that whole episode of temper tantrum was just that, and didn't even reciprocate the cultural animosity emanating from the other side of the ocean.
