On the surface, I agree.

But in another sense, it's enabling behavior. It enables parents who want to evade the responsibility to instill values in their children. It enables parents who want to turn over part of their parental role to the states because they don't have either the skill or the will to do it themselves.

We would be much better off giving parents the skills and training to be good parents, and then holding them responsible for being so.
