Depends what your definition of "is" is. <GGGGGG>

Actually, both are correct:

The employee's pay is much less than 50% of the US employee's pay.

The employer's cost in India could be 50% of the cost in USA. Especially if you include start-up costs. Employers tend to estimate what will it cost to build and operate a 100 person call center or 50 person programming staff over time. You include computers, desks, utilities, telecommunications, people, managers, upper level managers (ie the USA HEAD HONCHO is INCLUDED, AKA VIGORISH), commissions, KPMG fees for the idea, etc.

Note 'average' wage in India is probably $1 to $2K. I am sure Les has it, maybe we could look at some 'want ads' from the India Times.

Other facts: I saw an Indian newspaper from Bangalore couple years ago, advertised $100K salaries for anyone who could speak English, had a CS degree, could pass an interview, and something else, forgot what? Job was in SV.

Also, many moons ago I bought some stones tiger eye amythst etc from some Indian dude, found out I was overcharged, tried to get my money back, he said "Too late money gone already spent on 10 homes for relatives" I did not believe him until I saw them "building" houses. Chiseling stones from the ground and carrying them strapped to their forehead to the site. Making bricks from dirt and straw. All labor costs, virtually no material cost at all. Amazing. Our ancestors did this here many moons ago, communities pitched in to 'raise houses'.
