Too Much Productivity And Too Little Looting?
August 20, 2003

Economics seems to have been turned on its head these days. Productivity, the “stuff” of higher standards of living, is now being viewed as a curse on this recovery. Let’s pass a law to destroy computers and earthmovers so that we can get this economy on a roll again. Some economists viewed the recent power blackout as an economic blessing in disguise. All that food that spoiled had to be re-ordered. And don’t forget the increase in battery sales. According to this logic, then, it was an economic shame that there was not more looting during the blackout. Then more television sets would have to be re-ordered and more shop windows would have to be repaired – creating jobs. Bastiat must be spinning in his grave!

Q&A on cars from intercst
Why, after all these years, can't the US manufacturers build a Camry/Accord/Maxima like car in terms of quality?

Short answer. Japanese car companies are run by engineers. American car companies are run by finance/legal/marketing types.

When the clean air standards were imposed 30 years ago, GM hired 2,000 lawyers and lobbyists to fight the regulations.

Honda hired 2,000 engineers to solve the problem.
