I approve of the use of atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although your defense is not very convincing, there is a defense. However, they were terror bombings, designed to break the will to resist through the shock of a weapon that could level a city with one bomb. Conventional terror bombing had already been carried out in both theaters, as a tit- for- tat against the tactics of the Axis, such as the Blitz, or the brutality of the siege of Nanking. The difference between the atomic bomb and incendiary bombs was formidable rise in destructive power, but enough incendiary bombs would do much the same thing. And whatever rationalizations one may make about the die- hard Japanese, one does not indiscriminately target women and children and claim that they were legitimate military targets........
