Filed at 5:07 p.m. ET

BOSTON (Reuters) - General Electric Co. (GE.N) said on Wednesday global orders for short-cycle products, such as appliances and plastics, fell as much as 5 percent in July.

Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE said the orders, measured in dollar volume, ranged from flat to down 5 percent, compared with the year-earlier period, according to information posted on the company's Web site.

GE's short-cycle orders are watched closely on Wall Street because they provide a barometer of the economy. GE Plastics, for example, is considered a leading economic indicator by company executives because its products touch industries ranging from auto manufacturing to compact disc production.

GE appliances, lighting and plastics orders during July ranged from flat to down 5 percent. GE Industrial product orders ranged from flat to up 5 percent.

Orders at GE Specialty Materials were up 5 percent to 10 percent.

GE shares fell 40 cents, or 1.34 percent, to close at $29.45 on the New York Stock Exchange.
