Good point. East Timor was set up by Kissinger to be invaded by Indonesia the next day. He'd just been in a meeting with the Indonesian bosses and presumably gave them the go ahead - a bit like Saddam was given a green light for Kuwait [not to mention Iran in the early 1980s and a lot of support as revenge for the hostage taking].

The idea then was that East Timor was commie, so deserved to be taken over. But oops, commies turned out to have more in common with the USA than Islamic Jihad did, so they supported the wrong lot. Now, Islamic Jihad is paying back for East Timor and a lot more besides.
