Well, I respect your opinion, and we both share the general principle of letting kids work out what they can; I guess we differ on the right place to draw that line.

I grew up, and I suspect you and Karen and X and many others here also grew up, in a society where kids were basically left to work out their problems (I agree, 3 was too young an age for me to have picked) and not hovered over by parents. We called kids names, we were called names. We didn't have school counselors and psychiatrists and playground monitors helping assuage our bruised egos. And we turned out fine.

I want to protect children from things that will do them permanent harm. But I also want them to learn how to deal with problems themselves, to become resilient and self-reliant. And I think the "no child ever called a name" movement doesn't help establish those values.
