I can't speak for others, but this situation seems unique to me in the the way The Rock was brought in, displayed, and in the intent of that placement. When you mention other displays, e.g., the Mn. mural, they seem to be more in line with your original defense of religion as symbol. The mural has historic significance, and it is arguably art.
The Rock would look better over a grave.
It is not there as art, nor as an historic symbol.
I personally like the mural, but again, I am not a liberal pinhead.
