We never had a problem until about 10 years ago.

We never had a problem with colored drinking fountains either. That's what happens when we've always done something a certain way and then reach the point where the time begins to be ripe to move to the next level.

I meant to explicitly mention before your point that the onus is on the ones who want change to make their point, not on those who want to defend the status quo. I agree with you. The status quo is always the default and the onus is on those who want to change.

It's unfortunate that the original warriors for this change were not the best poster children, for one, and also that the tool used was judicial override, a tool with a lot of baggage. This caused a backlash and a lot of polarization and hostility that may never be overcome. But the "they started it" argument, while exhilarating for the choir, is not a very classy argument. Nor does it obviate the merits of the counter argument--it mearly makes the exhilarated incapable of listening to them.
