Thoughts on the Job Market

8/21/03 10:54 AM EDT

A sobering tale.

Cynicism is an unpleasant way of saying the truth. -- Lillian Hellman
A good friend of mine applied for a job last week. It was the type of job that two or three years ago would've gone begging. From what she told me the pay was decent, not great, and benefits were only fair. It was for a web consulting/computer graphics type firm. Fortune 500 company. Mind you, this person I'm talking about is very talented; back in 2000, she was turning away business.

So the interview went well, and as she was leaving, she asked the interviewer how many other résumés he had gotten for this position. His answer...380!!

Why am I telling this story? That, man, it's tough out there, real tough. And when I see moves like this in the market, I have to be a bit skeptical. And I have to put some shorts out. Yeah, I know things are better, they are. But hearing stories like this, makes me believe that Mr. Market is waaaaayy ahead of himself.
