I think you underestimate or misinterpret the motives of at least some of the opponents. I don't underestimate anything. I simply choose not to focus on the nuts on both sides, which I expect are relatively small in number and have a few screws loose. I'm prepared, for the purposes of working out a problem, to ignore that there are nuts out there who want to turn my country into a theocracy. Can't you ignore that there are nuts out there scraping "in God we trust" off coins? We can't solve problems if potentially sensible people allow themselves to be polarized by the nuts. And if sensible people can come up with a sensible solution, the nuts who persist won't have an audience so who cares about them.
