Note that there can be some non-linearity at work here - a small change in susceptibility might have a huge effect on the numbers ulitimately infected - it might make the difference between a small outbreak dying out or becoming epidemic.

Re-reading the article I posted the link to, I see the following:

Influenza: sporadic summer isolation, occasional clusters of disease without epidemic spread

So the 'flu bug appears to be around in the summer, but no epidemic spread. But I've never seen any reference to "mild 'flu" in the summer.
