JDN, as Americans I'm sure we generally agree on what we would like the world to look like. The problem we are having is in deciding whether we can FORCE it into that place or otherwise hurry up and aid the process.

I happen to think that in other countries and with other cultures, the pace of change and the place where change takes them is out of our hands. I believe that if we try to push our view of the world on them we LOSE ground rather than gain it. That's why I'm a "self defense" use of force proponent and that's why I believe that "self defense" means self defense, not any justification we can find to use force in a part of the world we want to control.

Bottom line is that I agree that it would be great, (and represent our only chance of success) if the Iraqis could serve side by side with our soldiers and eventually supplant them. I also believe in the goal of peace in the Middle East and that a success in Iraq would aid in that process. I simply cannot fathom, however, how the steps we have taken and are taking under the leadership of Bush are going to help us achieve either goal.
