......willingness to be intellectual lackeys of the rich allows for low taxation and the socialization of police-state costs--e.g., the incredibly large prison population in the US, which reduces the security costs to the rich and allows them greater freedom than they would otherwise have, given their enormous theft of national wealth which would instill class resentment in other societies.....

Thank you Lenin for that rousing pile of Socialist clap trap.

the great thing about America is that there is no organized resentment of the rich.

Sure there is, it's called the Democratic party and most institutions of higher learning here in this country.

unfortunately, even the complacent, poorly educated middle class of the US is likely to sit up and take notice as their real incomes decline in absolute terms,

Over the last hundred years or so the largest group of people who saw their real incomes decline lived in Communist countries, you know the ones who had highly organized resentment of the rich and redistribution of income as part of their creed. The more this country moves towards Socialism the more it will impoverish everyone rich and poor. The Russians with their flat tax will bury us (finally). There is such a gulf between our standard of living and the formerly Communist countries that the labor is cheaper by multiples and is the main reason we're seeing labor intensive industries move to China.

The government is not better at investing capital, never. Wealth of a nation grows from investment of risk capital. The fact that you seem to think you can make middle class people richer by taking money from those who will use their last dollar to invest and sending it to those who will use their last dollar to consume (while losing a large percentage to administration by passing it through an inefficient government) shows that you don't really understand how an economy grows or where jobs come from. Industry comes from people trying to get a bigger return for their capital, from the rich trying to get richer. You think we should stop them, even if it makes the country poorer overall.

The envy and resentment of the rich in this country is absurd in the extreme if you spend any time traveling to other countries. The only thing we're poorer in, is spirit. I've never seen so many people with so much, be so miserable because someone else has a little more down the road. Meanwhile the majority of the world's residents would be happy if they get enough to eat tonight. Why limit your largess to only this country? Could it be that if you do it means more for you and if you include the rest of the world it means less for you? Ha!
