Nobody can get arrested for not reading the 10 commandments the way they could get arrested for drinking at the wrong fountain.

I realize that. I acknowledged that one was more severe than the other. But both the sign on the fountain and the plaque in the courthouse send a message from the majority to the minority that the will of the majority prevails. Now, given that everyone already knows that, when the majority takes it upon itself to actively assert that message, it is beyond redundant, it is bullying, keeping the minority in its place. Tacky, IMO. And if the minority reacts to that with hostility rather than submission, well, for heaven's sake, is that really so hard to understand?
