Good post.

Not to belabour the point, but one can find precisely the same nasty set of data points across most of the nation's economic activity.

While some folks don't seem to "get it", an economy that depends exclusively on consumer buying, is obviously vulnerable to the impact of lay-offs. With more than two years of relentless "downsizing" behind us (and no evidence whatsoever of any respite from a ceaseless storm of pink slips), many former "consumers" no longer "consume" and those that are still employed are pulling in their horns. Making things worse, consumer debt levels are breathtaking and have reached the outer limits. One has to be viewing the proceedings from a distant planet not to recognize that an ugly spiral is both tightening and has reached critical mass. It is only a question of time as to when stock market participants lift their collective heads from the sand and see the hurricane on the horizon. And unfortunately, few of them will have time to reach high ground.
