Chip tracker jumps to another 14-mo. high in pre-open (SMH, INTC, AMD, AMAT, TXN, MU) By Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- The Merrill Lynch Semiconductor Holdrs (SMH) rallied $1.44 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $36.99 in pre-open trading, and is poised to make a 14-month high for the fifth straight session. Intel (INTC) , the chip sector tracker's most-heavily weighted component, surged $1.79, or 6.8 percent, to $28.18, the highest level seen since early June 2002, after the sector bellwether raised its third quarter revenue outlook. Among other SMH components seeing early activity, Intel chief rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) powered up 7.4 percent to $10.15, Applied Materials (AMAT) gained 4.4 percent to $21.65, Texas Instruments (TXN) rose 4 percent to $23.03 and Micron Technology (MU) hiked up 6.1 percent to $14.60.
