"The court's ruling compared Moore to segregationist Southern governors of the past who refused to integrate college campuses even after federal court orders to do so -- and predicted that if Moore appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court he would lose" August 14

Supreme Court Refuses Alabama Judge on Ten Commandments

Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court refused to block an order forcing Alabama's chief justice to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state's Judicial Building.
State Chief Justice Roy Moore said in a petition to the Supreme Court that he placed the commandments monument in the rotunda of the Judicial Building in Montgomery to recognize "the moral foundation of our law."

A federal judge and a federal appeals court have ruled that the monument is unconstitutional and said Moore must remove the monument by midnight Wednesday.

Other justices on the state court, and state officials, have said they would honor the order.

Moore's supporters have been conducting a vigil at the monument praying that it be allowed to remain.
